“All the wonders of life are already here. They’re calling you. If you can listen to them, you will be able to stop running. What you need, what we all need, is silence. Stop the noise in your mind in order for the wondrous sounds of life to be heard. Then you can begin to live your life authentically and deeply.”
― Thích Nhất Hạnh

This photo that I took near Melbourne, FL brings me home to inner silence and profound peace, so it was a natural to flow with this post about the Peace of Silence.

PEACE OF SILENCE
Dear Friend in Peace,
Silence sings to our hearts and offers us a powerful path to peace. Our minds have been trained to be on guard, to offer us commentary on almost everything and even to try to convince us that we should be very, very worried about everything.
Thank heavens, our hearts are far too wise for such unpeaceful behavior. Silence is the language of our hearts, the language of peace. Once we quiet our minds, everything changes, and we can hear our compassionate, peaceful hearts as they guide us to remember:
“You are not your thoughts.
You are the silence beneath them.”
- Buddhism Insight
Once we stop listening to the worry warts in our heads and start listening to silence, the ever-present silence within, we give ourselves, everyone around us, and our world the blessing, the gift of peace.
How, you might wonder, in these days of much external noise, calls to anger, calls to division, calls to hate and fear do I shift from listening to these calls to arms to inner silence?
It’s simple, if not always easy: when we want peace more than the constant inner chatter, we will choose inner silence and its partner peace. We will also realize that such change can be gradual and require patience. Here are a couple of other possibilities for returning to Peace through Silence:
- Allow your breath to be your guide and be mindful of when you are breathing in and when you are breathing out. Focus on your breath. As Thich Nhat Hahn would say when you are breathing in, silently tell yourself: “I am breathing in.” When you are breathing out, silently tell yourself: “I am breathing out.” Eventually, you will simply be able to breathe in and know you are breathing in and breathe out and know you are breathing out. While you are focused on your breath, there is no inner chatter, so peace flows naturally. The more that we practice conscious breathing, the easier and sooner we are able to return to peace.
- Listen to the SILENCE between your breaths.
o Savor the silence.
o Listen to the silence.
o Feel your heart fill with peace.
Peace asks for our silence in order to hear the universal OM and become attuned to the rhythm of the universe.
May we allow silence to be our guide to peace in every moment.
Thank you for choosing peace in your thoughts, words, and actions.
Yours in peace and love always,
Donna
