Dear Friend in Peace,

International Peace Day was established in 1981 by unanimous resolution of the United Nations to be the 21st of September each year. It is an opportunity for all people to come together to honor peace and commit to nurture peace within ourselves and with our neighbors near and far. And so it is that we celebrate Peace today.

In honor of this hallowed day and our commitment to peace, I wrote the following poem. May it guide us to greater peace.

Peace Calls

Peace requires no armies
no resolutions
no statements
no press releases
Peace requires much more
--
Peace needs us
Each of us
To stop
To breathe
To be
--
To be hope
To be compassion
To be brother and sisterhood
To be love
--

Peace needs me
Peace needs you
To affirm and vow
I choose peace in this moment
I choose peace in this breath
I choose peace NOW
